An alarming decline in honeybees due to a phenomenon scientists call Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has raised awareness about the essential role bees and other pollinators play in our food supply. We simply cannot do without them.
Use of a common pesticide has been linked to CCD but it has not yet been banned even as the decline in bee populations becomes a matter of greater urgency.
Gardeners can help sustain bee populations and help other pollinators as well by growing plants that provide nectar and pollen and providing water and shelter from the wind.
