Did you know that standing trees provide critical habitat for Northern Flickers and other cavity-nesting birds?
In recent years the loss of standing trees or snags has been considerable.
Joe Lamp’l, author of The Green Gardener’s Guide, advises gardeners who care about conservation to work with, not against nature.
“A significant cause of decline in the population of most cavity-nesting birds is the removal of standing dead trees. Leave a dead tree standing and you’ll play a crucial role in preserving increasingly rare and critical habitat for cavity-nesting birds, squirrels, chipmunks and other mammals.”
Now, about that storm injured or dying tree…if it’s safe to leave it there, let it be.
