Clematis henryi
Augustine Henry (1857-1930) was an Irish botanist who gained fame for collecting hundreds of thousands of plant specimens for England’s Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. His name was given to many plants, among them rhododendron augustinii, viborium henryi and the clematis pictured here.
Henry trained as a physician and studied Chinese; he was a customs officer in China when he discovered his life’s work. Author Seamus O’Brien details Henry’s fascinating life in his book, “In the Footsteps of Augustine Henry” (Garden Art Press).
