If your garden has an abundance of mixed shade and dappled sunlight, hostas are for you. These hardy, low maintenance perennials can light up the shade. They’re well suited for woodland gardens, beds, borders and edging along paths.
A word of caution, however: hostas can be addictive; one is never enough and there are many varieties to choose from in a dazzling array of shapes, textures, colors and sizes. Several varieties also have wonderfully fragrant flowers.
We’re heading into a heat wave, the perfect time to mention that hostas look cool and refreshing even on hot summer days. Be sure to water them well during periods of intense heat. Apply a good layer of mulch as needed to help conserve moisture and keep roots cool.
