Mid- to late-summer can mean a second growing season in your garden. You can plant seeds of lettuce, chives, dill, chervil, parsley, cilantro and other cool weather herbs, flowers and vegetables for a fall harvest. In fact, August is a great time to plant perennials, shrubs and showy annuals. Just remember to mulch and water regularly and/or use soaker hoses and rain barrels to help get everything well established.
Preparing for a second season now will give you a bounty of beauty and ample opportunities to stock your pantry, fridge and freezer later. I recommend buying organic seeds. Renee’s Garden is an excellent source for organic seeds. I love the fantastic variety and heirlooms.
