Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida)
According to experts at the Missouri Botanical Garden (horticulturists and botanists) flowering dogwoods like these display showy white and pink flower-like bracts, which are actually modified leaves. The Dogwood flowers are the small yellow-green clusters at the center of the bracts.
The spring season of bloom is all too brief and climate change is bringing July-like temperatures over the next two days. This kind of heat can scorch delicate blossoms, but thankfully, here in the Northeast, we had light rain and overcast skies for the first half of the day, offering some protection for tender, new growth.
